Mental Health Matters: 5 Ways to Start a Conversation
Inspired by Seize the Awkward

It’s time we normalize talking about mental health. Talking to a friend about their mental health can be awkward, but it can really help. It doesn’t matter how you ask, it just matters that you do. Here are some ways you can help get the conversation started.

  • “Hey, we haven’t talked in a while. How are you?”
  • “Are you okay? You don’t seem like yourself lately.”
  • “Hey, you seem frustrated today. I’m here for you.”
  • “Seems like something’s up. Do you wanna talk about what’s going on?”
  • “I’m worried about you and would like to know what’s up so I can help.”

If you’re concerned about a friend, reach out and start the conversation.

Reduce Communication Barriers with the TigerChat App

Masks can make communication hard for everyone. Visual cues (facial expressions, lip movements) and vocal information (spoken words and tone) are important parts of communication.

TigerChat is a new app designed especially for the RIT community to help eliminate communication barriers! This app allows our campus community to converse with one another (or a group) using automatic speech recognition (ASR) technology and typing. It is free to members of the RIT community – students, faculty, and staff.

With the TigerChat app, you can…

  • See the conversation as it happens. There is no waiting for someone to press “send”.
  • Communicate using automatic speech recognition technology or typing.
  • Use the app on your favorite device. No download required to use the app.

How to get TigerChat:

  • Go to tigerchat.app
Or select the app icon on the RIT Mobile app

Nap it up.

It is well known that college students’ schedules are typically hectic, stressful and require late nights to finish assignments. Students may use long bouts of time between classes or extracurricular activities to get caught up on homework, watch television, eat a snack or take part in something widely popular…napping. Napping has several health benefits when done correctly. Research suggests that napping between 10-20 minutes is the ideal length of time for an adult. Naps lasting longer than this may result in grogginess and trouble getting a full night’s sleep.

The benefits of napping correctly:

  • Reduction of sleepiness
  • Improved ability to learn
  • Assist in memory formation
  • Better regulate emotions
  • Improve alertness and reaction time

Each week, we are sharing a financial wellness tip to help you make the connection between financial management decisions, your overall wellness, and student success. Money touches every aspect of our lives, and a lack of financial literacy can cause unnecessary stress and negatively impact one’s mental and physical health.

Monitoring a Budget: Understanding Expenses

Last week, we covered an important part of budgeting: understanding your income as a college student. This week, we are focusing on monitoring your budget and understanding your expenses.

For example, if you budgeted $200 this month for food but actually spent $250, it is important to review your spending to determine why you went over budget and how to avoid overspending in the future. Purchasing convenience goods is an easy way to hurt your budget. Convenience goods are consumer items that are widely available and purchased frequently with minimal effort. What falls into this category?  Basically anything you can get in line at a grocery store/gas station or a vending machine - candy, soda (or pop), chips, gum, etc. The issue with convenience goods is that you typically pay a premium for the convenience of the good.

Although convenience goods appear to be cheap, the costs add up quickly. If you plan ahead and purchase these items during your weekly grocery trip, you could save over the semester and reduce the amount you are spending on food in your monthly budget. By reducing expenses in one category of your budget, you can free up some income to be used in other areas, such as saving, investing, recreation, or entertainment.
