Reporting an Incident

Reporting an Incident
RIT Red Folder
The Red Folder is a resource that provides information on common indicators of student distress.
If you or someone else is in need of assistance or has a concern that should be addressed please report using one of the methods below.
EMERGENCY situations needing immediate response should call 911 or 585-475-3333 for Public Safety.
If you have questions about any of the reporting processes listed below, you can ask them confidentially by contacting the RIT Ombuds Office.
Report COVID-19 Protocol Violations
Your concern for the health and safety of the RIT community is appreciated. Here are some tips for responding if you encounter an unmasked individual on campus who is not in a private office, living space, or eating: directly ask the individual to put their mask on, communicate a general reminder about the mask requirement with everyone in the space, or connect with a responsible party, such as a supervisor or lab manager for assistance. If you observe ongoing violations related to COVID-19 protocols and/or refusal to wear a mask even when requested, please complete a COVID-19 report.
Report Concerns about a Student
The Red Folder is a resource available to faculty and staff that provides information on common indicators of student distress. This resource offers in-the-moment process tips on how to best help a student in distress by providing a decision tree and detailed list of campus resources.
The Tiger Concern Report is used to document behavior that a RIT community member may perceive as concerning, worrisome, or threatening. Tiger Concern Reports are reviewed by the Student Behavior Consultation Team (SBCT). Reported concerns are reviewed throughout the day during regular business hours. If you feel that someone could be in immediate danger, including yourself, please contact RIT Public Safety immediately at 585-475-3333 or call 911.
Report a Crime or Policy Violation
RIT community members are encouraged to report all crimes and safety-related incidents to Public Safety in a timely manner by dialing 585-475-3333 (voice) 585-205-8333 (text). Public Safety Officers will provide information and resources on reporting a crime to the appropriate law enforcement agency when requested by the victim. If you do not want to pursue action within RIT's student conduct system or the local criminal court system, you may still want to consider making a confidential report. With your permission, a Public Safety Investigator can file a report on the details of the incident without revealing your identity. Confidential reports are disclosed in the annual crime statistics for the University.
Report a Title IX Concern
Title IX Includes gender discrimination, sexual assault, sexual harassment, sexual violence, stalking, dating and domestic violence. If you have questions about whether a behavior might be considered a violation, please contact the Title IX Coordinator.
At RIT, the offices providing confidential support are:
Counseling and Psychological Services
NTID Counseling & Academic Advising Services
Ombuds Office
Spirituality and Religious Life
Student Health Center
RIT Ethics and Compliance Hotline
RIT’s Ethics and Compliance Hotline provides a simple way for RIT students, faculty and staff to anonymously report activities that may involve misconduct or violations of university policies or applicable regulations or contractual obligations. This hotline is independently operated for RIT by EthicsPoint—a third-party vendor—to maintain the anonymity of those who report irregularities or concerns. Although RIT’s Ethics and Compliance Hotline may also be used to notify RIT of harassment and discrimination concerns, including Title IX violations (gender discrimination, sexual misconduct, sexual harassment and sexual violence), it is highly encouraged that these incidents be reported to Human Resources, RIT Title IX Coordinators, RIT Public Safety or one of the confidential resources available.
Report a Biased-Related Incident
RIT is committed to creating and maintaining a campus environment free from unlawful discrimination and harassment. Acts of discrimination and harassment are in opposition to the university’s values and have no place in our community. The university aims to foster a welcoming environment for all members of the campus community by modeling, supporting, and educating the RIT community on our mission and values, which are centered on inclusion, diversity, and equity.
A bias incident is an act of discrimination, harassment, intimidation, violence, or criminal offense committed against any person, group, or property that is motivated by prejudice or bias toward another’s race, religion, age, citizenship, color, creed, culture (including Deaf culture), actual or perceived disabilities, gender, marital status, ethnic or national origin, political affiliation or preference, military or veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or genetic predisposition. Expressions vary, and can be in the form of language, words, signs, symbols, threats, or actions that could potentially cause alarm, anger, fear, or resentment in others, or that endanger the health, safety, and welfare of a member(s) of the community, even when presented as a joke.
We all are human and have unconscious biases, and so must beware, despite our best intentions. We as a community are accountable as individuals and to each other for our conduct. We wish to encourage open lines of communication between the members of our community and the university to ensure that all feel comfortable reporting any incidents of bias that they may experience or observe, without fear of retaliation.
